Sure, we know that social isolation can be a bit of a drag but “social distancing” doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. In fact, it’s probably the best time to get closer with your loved ones and what better way to do that than by bonding over board games? We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorites for the game room, from the classics to current hits, that will start the party and get you learning more about your loved ones. Just remember you won’t be able to #stayhome and play board games forever. Sorry!
Cards Against Humanity
Nothing gets a party started like politically incorrect banter, and this game thrives on it. Players complete fill-in-the-blank statements using words or phrases typically deemed too risqué for casual conversation. This is your chance to explore the dark recesses of your friends’ psyche for big laughs and close-knit bonds. It should be noted that you might not want to include the kids for this game but, if you’re concerned, check out the more family-friendly Kids Against Humanity.
Jenga
There’s something about Jenga that gets the whole room excited. In this classic game of dexterity challenge, each player takes turns removing one block from the tower at a time. Each block removed is then placed on top of the tower, increasing the possibility of it toppling with each turn. The anticipation in the room continues to build until it all comes tumbling down.
Codenames
A modern party game for the whole family. Two teams compete by each having a “spymaster” give a one-word clue that can point to the “codename” cards on the table. The opposing team players attempt to guess their team’s words while avoiding the words of the other team, leaving room for plenty of inside jokes.
Villainous
In this Disney-themed game, each player selects a famous villain from a Disney movie. With each turn, the player moves their character to a different location on the board – takes an action- then refills their hand to four cards. Cards signify allies, items, effects, conditions, or curses. The fun comes in when you must pull cards that affect each opponents’ “fate” – allowing other players to mess with each particular villain.
Twister
This is the game that gave new meaning to the term “social bonding.” Player’s physical skill and balance are tested as they try to position themselves on a large plastic mat covered in color-coordinated dots. One player spins the dial to determine which limb is to touch each dot. And of course, all this maneuvering and balancing is done over, under, and on top of your friends and neighbors.
Exquisite Corpse
If you’re looking for a way to collaborate creatively, this game might be your new favorite – and all you’ll need is a sheet of paper and a few pens! Out of your imagination, you draw something – and your friends, unbeknownst of what you’ve drawn, finish your work. You do this by drawing on a section of the page, folding it back so the next player can add to what you’ve drawn without seeing it. When the last player is finished you unveil your collective achievement, which usually creates big laughs. You can also play by setting down a set of rules and while seeing what’s previously been drawn, finish the work.
